Coach's Comments December, 2007

Dear Athletes and Parents,

Happy Holidays!

The High School girls are slowly trickling back into the pool. It is vital to your training to come to every practice. If practice is spotty you are always starting over instead of moving forward. I base my workouts on the season not on who is there. I am moving forward with the plans for the season and hopefully the few swimmers who do come regularly will get the most out of the training and drop the times they were hoping to as stated on their goal sheets.

Remember, if you want to swim fast in the meet you have to swim meet times in practice and watch the pace clock. Check when you leave and when you come in. Do the math to figure out how fast you went. The idea is to be able to get at least 10 seconds rest each repeat so you are ready to swim fast the next repeat of the set. If you are not getting rest you either need to go faster or we need to adjust your yardage so you can make the interval. That is what interval training is all about.

I am preparing you for our annual Holiday Break training. When we all do doubles and get the most out of the season. You put in the work so far this season, this is not the time to take off and take a break. This is the time to take advantage of doubling your opportunity to improve. The doubles will give you the boost to take you to the next level of training and help you to meet your goals you wrote up in the fall. Doubles are a great time to get to know your teammates between practices with activities such as going out to breakfast, movies, hanging out, play games, and with all this snow it looks like sledding (just don't get hurt)!

I wrote up 10 tips to help you improve:

  1. Trust your coach
  2. Be on time to practice (this means in the water on time)
  3. Practice meet times (not just on the last one)
  4. Talk to your coach ( before or after practice)
  5. Do not take the day before the meet off to rest. ( I plan the season, let me rest you)
  6. Practices are planned around a seasonal cycle (you miss practice, you miss what we are working on that day)
  7. Be consistent
  8. Cheer your teammates on. (Practice is not easy and teammates need to encourage one another not bring each other down)
  9. Stay positive (even when everything hurts, I have you right where I need you at this point in time. Hopefully if you've put in the work you will be ready for the big meet)
  10. Have fun! (fulfilling your goals is fun, keep your goals in mind)

I wish all our high school boys well in their season.
